Recapturing a Certain Youth

This series began with JAN57. The painting is of my mother when she was young and single with her whole life ahead of her. The darkness in the background is the despair, which enveloped her life when my father left her after thirty-six years of marriage. Even though I have painted her as a young woman, I know her future. The other paintings include my mother again and her sister and friends. I wanted to give her back her happy youth and tried to keep these works a little more sunny.
